What is pyrolysis of organic compounds on an atomic level?

Hi there,

I don't really have too much of a background in chemistry other than a year in high school a few years ago, so do you know of a website (other than Wikipedia) that describes pyrolysis on the molecular/atomic level? Or can you possibly explain it if you can? I'm just a bit confused how it works with the absorption of heat and so on.

Thanks so much!
