Chickadees are little pigs at seed-feeders. At least they are not wasteful, like the goldfinches. Goldfinches will take a sunflower seed out of the feeder, then drop it on the ground.
That's what chickadees do here. They sit on the feeder and throw seeds away till they find one they like.

I haven't seen European goldfinch in my yard, they are not very common.

The chickadees are more frugal here. The goldfinches are prima-donnas and throw away good seeds like crazy. They have tiny beaks for finches, and maybe they can't easily crack black-oil sunflower seeds, but it ticks me off to see them throwing so much good food onto the ground.

Goldfinches prefer thistle seed and smaller seeds. I'm sure the mice, chipmunks and squirrels appreciate the discarded seeds.

Meanwhile - butterfly is not so common

I thought of a random thought today. On a scale of one to ten it was a 7.467 in entertainment value. However, now I can't remember it.

Watching a german movie as background while I studied for German was not a terrible idea.

Having that movie be the most depressing Holocaust film I have ever seen was probably not so bright...

I got distracted from reading about RÝmer's calculation of the speed of light and ended up on a wikipedia tangent learning about marine chronometers. When reading the history of past scientific discoveries it's easy to forget that there were some amazing pieces of engineering created with what was known at the time.

Marine chronometers were life-savers! The longitude problem was a big big one.

Union Pacific (UP) Railroad is observing 150 years of operation. Although Abraham Lincoln established the charter in 1962 and groundbreaking took place in 1963 in the settlement of Omaha in the Nebraska Territory, construction was delayed until 1865 due to insufficient funds. The Union Pacific connected with the Central Pacific in Promontory, Utah in May, 1869.

My son has caught flu and the doctor prescribed a medicine that costs $136. I have a drug discount card that brought that down to $118. Then we have primary insurance that brought the cost down to $52 and secondary insurance that paid the rest bringing the total to $0.
