Metal Matrix Composites (where to buy?)

In summary, the conversation is about a graduate student seeking Aluminum Metal Matrix composites with Boron Carbide reinforcement for their research. They are specifically looking for 1/4" thick sheets and are asking if anyone knows of companies that sell this material. One suggestion is MSC Industrial Supply Company, while another is Goodfellow. Additional suggestions are given for researching the chemical-physical properties of these composites, including checking online sources and contacting Hardwire LLC.

Hello! I am a grad student and am trying to acquire some Aluminum Metal Matrix composites with Boron Carbide reinforcement (15-20%) for research. I need the material to be in 1/4" thick sheets. Does anyone know of any companies that sell this sort of material?

Thanks!

Dear all:

For the chemical-physical properties of these composites I should first check various online sources.

Good luck,

just a thought...

good luck

1. What are Metal Matrix Composites?

Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) are materials made up of a metal matrix, such as aluminum or titanium, reinforced with a secondary material, such as ceramic or carbon fibers. These composites offer enhanced mechanical and physical properties compared to traditional metals, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

2. How are Metal Matrix Composites made?

MMC are typically made through a process called powder metallurgy, where the metal matrix is mixed with the secondary material in powder form and then compressed and heated to form a solid. Other methods include liquid metal infiltration, where molten metal is poured over the secondary material, and solid-state processing, where the secondary material is mechanically mixed into the metal matrix.

3. What are the advantages of using Metal Matrix Composites?

MMC offer a range of advantages over traditional metals, including increased strength, stiffness, and resistance to wear and corrosion. They also have a lower density, making them lighter in weight, and can be tailored to specific applications by varying the type and amount of reinforcement material used.

4. Where can I buy Metal Matrix Composites?

There are several companies that manufacture and sell MMC, including specialized suppliers and major metal and materials companies. It is important to do research and compare prices and quality before making a purchase, as well as to ensure that the supplier has experience and knowledge in the production of MMC.

5. What industries use Metal Matrix Composites?

MMC are commonly used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense, where high performance and lightweight materials are crucial. They are also used in sports equipment, electronics, and medical devices. As technology advances and the demand for stronger and lighter materials increases, the use of MMC is expected to grow in a wide range of industries.
