Whats the acceleration of an electron in lightning?

In summary, the conversation discusses the equation a=qE/m for finding the acceleration of an electron and its relevance to finding the acceleration in lightning. The topic of the Unruh effect and its potential impact on the temperature change in lightning is also mentioned. The conversation ends with a question about the theory of relativity and the possibility of exceeding the speed of light.

I thought nothing can accelerate past the speed of light according to the theory of relativity. Why does using either one of those links suggest accelerations that lead to speeds greater than the speed of light even with less than 1 second of travel?

1. What is the acceleration of an electron in lightning?

The acceleration of an electron in lightning can vary depending on the strength and duration of the lightning strike. On average, it is estimated to be around 1.5 x 10^17 meters per second squared.

2. How does the acceleration of an electron in lightning compare to Earth's gravity?

The acceleration of an electron in lightning is significantly greater than Earth's gravity, which is approximately 9.8 meters per second squared. Lightning strikes can accelerate electrons to speeds close to the speed of light.

3. What factors affect the acceleration of an electron in lightning?

The acceleration of an electron in lightning can be affected by several factors, including the strength and duration of the lightning strike, the distance between the cloud and the ground, and the electric potential difference between the cloud and the ground.

4. Can the acceleration of an electron in lightning be measured?

Yes, the acceleration of an electron in lightning can be measured using specialized equipment such as high-speed cameras and electric field sensors. However, due to the extremely short duration of lightning strikes, it can be challenging to accurately measure the acceleration of electrons.

5. Why is it important to understand the acceleration of an electron in lightning?

Understanding the acceleration of an electron in lightning is important for several reasons. It can help us better predict and prepare for severe weather events, improve our understanding of electricity and electromagnetism, and aid in the development of lightning protection systems.
