Is there a mathematical way to balance equations (by hand)?

As opposed to guess and checking by inspection. Is there a method mathematically like with an algorithm or something to balance equations by hand (without the aid of any computer programs or anything like that except a simple calculator)?

There is the algebraic method of reaction balancing - whether it is suitable for hand work is a matter of algebraic skills.
