Best Free Computer algebra system, like mathematica but free

In summary, a computer algebra system (CAS) is a software program that allows for manipulation of mathematical expressions and equations, numerical and symbolic calculations, and visualization of mathematical concepts. While Mathematica is a proprietary software that requires a license, free systems like Sage or Maxima can be downloaded and used for free. These free systems can perform many of the same tasks as Mathematica, but may have limitations in features and technical support. To learn how to use a free computer algebra system, there are online resources, tutorials, books, and courses available, as well as online communities and workshops for guidance from experienced users.

You should tryout sage: http://www.sagemath.org/

It includes Maxima (and optionally Octave), and lots of other mathematics free software. It is definitely the best free software CAS (and it's got a great community).

I use SciLab, which like Octave, is nothing more than a MATLAB clone.

1. What is a computer algebra system?

A computer algebra system (CAS) is a software program that allows users to manipulate mathematical expressions and equations, perform symbolic and numerical calculations, and create visualizations of mathematical concepts.

2. What is the difference between Mathematica and a free computer algebra system?

Mathematica is a proprietary software program that requires a license to use, while a free computer algebra system, such as Sage or Maxima, is open-source and can be downloaded and used for free.

3. Can a free computer algebra system perform the same tasks as Mathematica?

Yes, a free computer algebra system can perform many of the same tasks as Mathematica, such as solving equations, graphing functions, and performing symbolic computations. However, Mathematica may have more advanced features and a more user-friendly interface.

4. Are there any limitations to using a free computer algebra system?

While a free computer algebra system can be a powerful tool for mathematical computations, it may not have all of the features and capabilities of a paid software program like Mathematica. Additionally, technical support and updates may not be as readily available.

5. How can I learn how to use a free computer algebra system?

Many free computer algebra systems have online documentation, forums, and tutorials available to help users learn how to use the software. There are also books and online courses available for some systems. It may also be helpful to join online communities or attend workshops to learn from experienced users.
