In this study of 60 patients with B12 deficiency, all hematologic parameters significantly improved from baseline over a 90 day interval. Reticulocytosis is an early sign of treatment effect which should appear between 5 and 10 days. This study compared oral and intramuscular B12 and found no significant difference. However, in pernicious anemia, a deficiency or lack of gastric intrinsic factor would normally preclude oral treatment, but oral therapy can be effective in some cases with certain preparations of B12 or in high doses.
