Are cosmic rays electromagnetic rays coming down from outer space? I've also read they are actually 90 percent protons, but I'm not sure what they are now. Thanks in advance.
Cosmic rays are high-energy particles that originate from outside of our solar system. They can range in size from tiny subatomic particles to massive atomic nuclei.
Cosmic rays are detected through a variety of methods, including ground-based detectors, high-altitude balloons, and satellite-based instruments. These detectors measure the interactions between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere or magnetic field.
The exact origin of cosmic rays is still a mystery, but scientists believe that they come from a variety of sources such as supernovae, black holes, and other high-energy events in our galaxy and beyond.
On Earth, most cosmic rays are blocked by our atmosphere and magnetic field. However, some high-energy cosmic rays can penetrate and cause damage to electronic equipment and even pose a health risk to astronauts and airline crew members.
There are several theories about the origin and nature of cosmic rays, including the shock acceleration theory, the supernova remnant theory, and the active galactic nuclei theory. Scientists are continually studying and developing new theories to better understand the mysteries of cosmic rays.
