In summary, a 78-year-old German woman went into the hospital last month to have surgery on her leg. Because of a mixup, she left the Hochfranken-Klinik in Münchberg, Germany, with an artificial anus. The fact that it comes from FRANKENPOST makes it even worse.

When it comes to a surgical mistake, this incident may take the cake: A 78-year-old German woman went into the hospital last month to have surgery on her leg. Because of a mixup, Frankenpost reports that she left the Hochfranken-Klinik in Münchberg, Germany, with an artificial anus.

I heard about that on the Tonight Show last night, of all places (Jay Leno made a big deal that they had to verify the story before he'd tell the joke, because it was just too weird for him to believe it).

I was half expecting someone to post and say, "OMG, MIH, you fell for that stupid fake story?!"

I wonder if they both work at the same time?

In any case, I'm sure she's getting a deal for a porn movie as we err... speak.

That's almost as bad as the guy that went into the hospital to get hemorrhoids removed and had his penis removed instead. The surgeon went insane in the operating room, I won't go into the gory details.

Well, if that's what she was complaining about, no wonder the docs got confused!

Do you think there's much of a market for second-hand sphincters? :bugeye:

"Anuses"? Don't you mean 'ani'?

It's a good thing 'anus' is Latin. If it were Greek, the plural would have been 'anodes'!

What is "Whoops - A Surgical Mistake"?

"Whoops - A Surgical Mistake" is a term used to describe a medical error that occurs during a surgical procedure. It can refer to a wide range of mistakes, from minor errors to serious complications.

How common are surgical mistakes?

According to a study published in JAMA Surgery, surgical mistakes occur in approximately 4,000 to 6,000 surgeries every year in the United States. However, the actual number may be higher as many mistakes go unreported.

What are the most common types of surgical mistakes?

The most common types of surgical mistakes include wrong site surgeries, wrong patient surgeries, and wrong procedure surgeries. Other common mistakes include leaving surgical instruments or sponges inside the patient's body, operating on the wrong body part, or performing the wrong surgery altogether.

What are the consequences of a surgical mistake?

The consequences of a surgical mistake can vary depending on the severity of the error. In some cases, it may result in minor complications that can be easily corrected. However, in more serious cases, it can lead to permanent disability, organ damage, or even death.

How can surgical mistakes be prevented?

There are several measures that can be taken to prevent surgical mistakes, including thorough pre-operative planning, proper communication between the surgical team, double-checking patient information and surgical procedures, and implementing safety checklists. It is also important for surgeons to disclose any past mistakes and continuously work towards improving their skills and techniques.
