Decay/Reactivity of DMSO and MSM

In summary, there is no specific expiration date for DMSO and it can last for many years if stored properly. Some people choose to store it in the fridge, but there is no noticeable difference in effectiveness between storing it at room temperature or in the fridge.

How long can one store dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

I don't have any experience with MSM, but have never had DMSO go bad. DMSO is one of those things we use a little bit every few years, and then sits on a shelf in between, and still seems just fine. I've known a few people to store it in the fridge if stored a long time, rather than at room temp (so it will freeze), but I haven't noticed any difference between the two storage methods other than the nuisance of having to wait for it to thaw when taken out of the fridge.

I can provide you with a response regarding the decay and reactivity of DMSO and MSM. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are both organic compounds that are commonly used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Firstly, DMSO and MSM are both highly stable compounds and do not readily undergo decay. However, they can react with certain chemicals, such as strong acids or oxidizing agents, which can lead to their decomposition. Therefore, it is important to store DMSO and MSM in a cool, dry place and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures or incompatible substances.

The shelf life of DMSO and MSM can vary depending on the specific storage conditions and the purity of the compounds. Generally, DMSO has a longer shelf life compared to MSM, with an average of 2-3 years if stored properly. On the other hand, MSM can last for 1-2 years under ideal storage conditions.

It is important to note that the purity of DMSO and MSM can also affect their stability and shelf life. Impurities or contaminants in the compounds can accelerate their decay or reactivity, leading to a shorter shelf life.

In conclusion, DMSO and MSM are stable compounds with a relatively long shelf life if stored properly. It is recommended to follow the storage guidelines and regularly check the purity of these compounds to ensure their stability and effectiveness.

1. What is the difference between DMSO and MSM?

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) are both organic sulfur compounds, but they have different molecular structures. DMSO has a sulfur atom, while MSM has two sulfur atoms. DMSO is also a liquid at room temperature, while MSM is a solid.

2. How do DMSO and MSM react in the body?

Both DMSO and MSM are absorbed into the body and broken down into their respective sulfur components. These sulfur components are then used by the body for various functions, such as promoting healthy joints and reducing inflammation.

3. Are there any potential side effects of using DMSO and MSM?

While DMSO and MSM are generally considered safe, some people may experience side effects such as skin irritation or a garlic-like taste in the mouth when using DMSO. MSM may also cause mild digestive issues in some individuals. It is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before using these compounds.

4. Can DMSO and MSM be used together?

Yes, DMSO and MSM can be used together as they both have similar benefits for the body. In fact, some studies have shown that combining these compounds can have a synergistic effect and may enhance their individual benefits.

5. How should DMSO and MSM be stored?

DMSO and MSM should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It is also important to keep them in a sealed container to prevent contamination. DMSO can also absorb other substances, so it is best to store it separately from other chemicals.
