The Cosmology - Particle Physics Connection
Mark Trodden
Plenary talk, delivered in slightly different forms at the Particles and Nuclei International Conference (PANIC05) and the CMB and Physics of the Early Universe International Conference (2006), 12 pages

"Modern cosmology poses deep and unavoidable questions for fundamental physics. In this plenary talk, delivered in slightly different forms at the Particles and Nuclei International Conference (PANIC05) in Santa Fe, in October 2005, and at the CMB and Physics of the Early Universe International Conference, on the island of Ischia, Italy, in April 2006, I discuss the broad connections between cosmology and particle physics, focusing on physics at the TeV scale, accessible at the next and future generations of colliders"

In order to get this to print, I had to download the postscript and convert to PDF on my computer.
the 12 pages of the paper were uploaded rotated 90 degrees
good paper though.
he is English, educated in UK, and I believe now at Syracuse University in US

the "message" of cosmology connection with HEP is not necessarily new or what's important about the paper, IMO the nice thing is Trodden's clear overview and personal perspective

I agree with Trodden's argument that particle physics and cosmology no longer exist as independent disciplines. The connection between the two fields has become much more prominent in recent years, as advances in both have led to a better understanding of the universe. With the advent of new tools, such as CMB measurements and particle colliders, we can now explore the physical laws governing the universe in an integrated way. This has enabled us to make progress on some of the most fundamental questions in physics.

1. How does cosmology and particle physics relate to each other?

The fields of cosmology and particle physics are closely connected, as they both seek to understand the fundamental nature of the universe. Cosmology studies the overall structure and evolution of the universe, while particle physics studies the smallest building blocks of matter and their interactions. Together, they provide a more complete picture of the universe and how it works.

2. What is the role of particle physics in understanding the early universe?

Particle physics plays a crucial role in understanding the early universe, as it helps us understand the fundamental forces and particles that governed the universe in its infancy. By studying the properties and interactions of particles, we can gain insight into the conditions of the universe during the Big Bang and how it evolved into its current state.

3. How has the study of particle physics impacted our understanding of the universe?

The study of particle physics has greatly impacted our understanding of the universe. It has allowed us to uncover the existence of new particles and forces, such as the Higgs boson, and has helped us develop theories, such as the Standard Model, to explain the fundamental interactions between particles. These discoveries have helped us better understand the origins and evolution of the universe.

4. Can particle physics help us understand the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy?

Yes, particle physics is currently being used to study the nature of dark matter and dark energy, two mysterious components that make up the majority of the universe. By studying the behavior of particles and their interactions, scientists hope to uncover the properties of dark matter and dark energy and ultimately understand their role in the universe.

5. What are some current research topics in the cosmology-particle physics connection?

Some current research topics in this field include the search for new particles and forces beyond the Standard Model, the study of the properties of dark matter and dark energy, and the investigation of the early universe through techniques such as cosmic microwave background radiation. Additionally, scientists are also exploring the possibility of a unified theory that can explain both particle physics and cosmology in a single framework.
