Passing ability on a single track

Is it feasible to build a track along which modules can move AND pass one another? I'm trying to write about a track that allows for 3 dimensional movement around a guideway, but I don't know the mechanics or engineering associated with it. I just need to know if it would be possible to build something like that. Anybody have any thoughts?
