    Motor Type
In summary, a hub motor has the rotor located inside the wheel hub while an outrunner motor has the rotor on the outside, affecting design and performance. Outrunner motors are generally considered more efficient due to a larger stator surface area. Both types can be used for electric bicycles, with hub motors being more common and outrunner motors for higher performance. For off-road use, hub motors are better for lower speeds and smoother terrains while outrunner motors are better for higher speeds and rougher terrains. Outrunner motors are usually more expensive due to their higher performance capabilities, but the cost difference may vary.

Dear Experts

I am thinking that an electric hub motor is the same type of AC motor as a regular Outrunner motor.

1. Both are using 3 phase ac current.
2. Both have 3 power lines.
3. Both are Brushless.

So, while they look slightly different, I like to confirm that both are basically the same types of AC motors commutated electronically.

Thanks.
Regards
Ramone

This Wiki link seems to suggest that there is very little difference in principle.

1. What is the difference between a hub motor and an outrunner motor?

A hub motor is a type of motor where the rotor is located inside the wheel hub, while an outrunner motor has the rotor located on the outside of the motor. This difference in placement affects the overall design, performance, and usage of the motor.

2. Which type of motor is more efficient?

It is commonly believed that outrunner motors are more efficient than hub motors. This is because outrunner motors have a larger surface area for the stator, which allows for better cooling and less heat loss. However, the efficiency of a motor also depends on other factors such as the design and quality of the motor.

3. Can both types of motors be used for electric bicycles?

Yes, both hub motors and outrunner motors can be used for electric bicycles. However, hub motors are more commonly used for electric bicycles as they are more compact and easier to install. Outrunner motors are typically used for higher performance applications such as electric scooters or skateboards.

4. Which type of motor is better for off-road use?

It depends on the specific needs and terrain of the off-road environment. Hub motors are better for lower speeds and smoother terrains, while outrunner motors are better for higher speeds and rougher terrains. Ultimately, the design and quality of the motor will have a greater impact on off-road performance.

5. Are there any significant cost differences between hub motors and outrunner motors?

In general, outrunner motors tend to be more expensive than hub motors due to their higher performance capabilities. However, the cost difference may vary depending on the brand, quality, and features of the motor. It is important to consider the specific needs and budget when choosing between these two types of motors.
