Acupuncture Effective for Migraine

In summary, a German study found that acupuncture was just as effective as standard drug therapy in reducing the number of migraine attacks. However, the study also showed that sham acupuncture was equally effective, raising questions about the true effectiveness of both treatments. The study also raises concerns about the recruitment of participants and the reliability of medication as a treatment for migraines.

... Acupuncture for migraine patients proved as effective as standard drug therapy in reducing the number of attacks -- but so did sham acupuncture, according to a German study. [continued]

So what is the conclusion here; that the drugs are just as much as sham as the acupuncture?

Well, it seems to be the case. Then again, I'd be curious about how they recruited their study volunteers. Afterall, if your medication is working, are you going to bother enrolling in a study to find out if acupuncture will treat your migraines? Though, medications don't work well for migraines, and in talking to one physician about migraines, he told me it was also really common that the medications would work initially, but stop working after taking them a while, so patients were often switching to new medications.

The conclusion of this study is that both acupuncture and sham acupuncture were equally effective in reducing the number of migraine attacks in patients. This suggests that the benefits observed in acupuncture may be due to a placebo effect rather than the actual treatment itself. However, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of acupuncture for migraines.

1. Is acupuncture effective for all types of migraines?

Acupuncture has been found to be effective for different types of migraines, including tension headaches, cluster headaches, and menstrual migraines. However, its effectiveness may vary from person to person.

2. How does acupuncture help with migraines?

The exact mechanism of how acupuncture helps with migraines is still being studied. However, it is believed that acupuncture can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. It may also help to regulate the nervous system and increase blood flow to the brain.

3. How many acupuncture sessions are needed to see results for migraines?

The number of acupuncture sessions needed to see results for migraines may vary depending on the individual. Some may experience relief after just a few sessions, while others may require more. It is recommended to have at least 6-8 weekly sessions to see significant improvements.

4. Is acupuncture safe for treating migraines?

Acupuncture is generally considered a safe treatment for migraines when performed by a trained and licensed acupuncturist. However, as with any medical treatment, there may be some risks and side effects, such as bruising, soreness, and fatigue. It is important to discuss any concerns with your acupuncturist before beginning treatment.

5. Can acupuncture be used as a preventive measure for migraines?

Yes, acupuncture can be used as a preventive measure for migraines. Regular acupuncture sessions may help to decrease the frequency and severity of migraines. It may also help to identify and address any underlying imbalances in the body that may be contributing to migraines.
