Main differences between single-well and double-well chaotic attractor

Hello all.

I'm trying to understand why a Duffing system with a double potential well behaves chaotically for larger set of parameter values than one with a single potential well. What are the main differences between both attractors?
Why Melnikov method can only be applied for a homoclinic chaos, i.e double potential well?
Thanks!
