In summary, former Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson expressed concern about the vulnerability of the US food supply to a potential terrorist attack. Despite increased inspections, only a small percentage of imported food is actually tested at ports and airports. Thompson, who was among several members to resign from President Bush's cabinet, emphasized the ease with which food could be tampered with and suggested bringing attention to the issue through national news.

...Thompson had said he worries "every single night" about a possible terror attack on the food supply, and despite dramatic increases in inspections of food imports, only "a very minute amount" of food is tested at ports and airports.

"For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do," Thompson said. "We are importing a lot of food from the Middle East, and it would be easy to tamper with that."

Thompson was the latest of eight members to quit Bush's 15-member Cabinet as the president moves into a second term. [continued]

having done a lot of work in the food industry [large scale production applications] and I can certainly vouch for the danger. In fact I have commented on this fact many times while on-site. I hate to say how easy it would be.

I have seen how easy it is to tamper with food and how difficult it is to detect the tampering.

It is concerning to see that the former Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, is so worried about a potential terror attack on our food supply and yet President Bush does not seem to share the same level of concern. With the increase in food imports and the minimal amount of testing being done, it is clear that there are vulnerabilities in our food supply that could be exploited by terrorists. It is concerning that despite these warnings, the government is not taking more proactive measures to protect our food supply. Additionally, the fact that eight members of Bush's Cabinet have resigned during his second term raises questions about the effectiveness and stability of his administration. As a citizen, I hope that our government takes this issue seriously and works towards securing our food supply to ensure the safety and well-being of the American people.

It is a sad state of affairs when the Secretary of Health and Human Services is worried about a potential terror attack on our food supply and the president is not alarmed. The fact that only a "very minute amount" of food is tested at ports and airports is concerning and shows a lack of urgency to address this issue. The potential for a terrorist attack on the food supply is real and should not be taken lightly. As Thompson mentioned, it would be easy for terrorists to tamper with imported food from the Middle East. It is alarming that this issue is not being given the attention it deserves. The fact that eight members of Bush's Cabinet have resigned also raises concerns about the administration's priorities and focus on important matters. Our food supply is a critical aspect of our national security and it is important that the government takes necessary steps to ensure its safety. Ignoring this warning and not taking proactive measures to protect our food supply is a dangerous stance. It is time for the government to address this issue and take necessary precautions to prevent a potential attack on our food supply.
