Why did Hawking bet against the Higgs?

In summary, despite being integral to the standard model and its success, Hawking bet against it due to its inability to predict the correct amount of vacuum energy. However, it was likely just a joke as the bet was only for a small amount of money.

Seeing as it was so integral to the standard model and since the SM is so remarkably successful, aside from its inability to predict the correct amount of vacuum energy, and seeing as no experiment has proved it wrong, why did Hawking bet against it? It was only a 100 dollars so maybe he was just joking.

I heard it was something like $1.98, not $100, which supports the idea that it was a joke.

1. Why did Stephen Hawking bet against the existence of the Higgs boson?

Stephen Hawking believed that the Higgs boson, also known as the "God particle," did not exist because it conflicted with his theory of black holes. He argued that if the Higgs boson existed, it would cause black holes to evaporate, which goes against the laws of physics.

2. Was Hawking's bet based on scientific evidence?

No, Hawking's bet was not based on scientific evidence. It was more of a friendly wager between physicists based on their differing theories and interpretations of the universe.

3. Did Hawking ever change his stance on the Higgs boson?

Yes, Hawking eventually changed his stance on the Higgs boson. In 2012, the Large Hadron Collider confirmed the existence of the Higgs boson, and Hawking publicly admitted that he had lost the bet.

4. How much was the bet between Hawking and Gordon Kane?

The bet between Hawking and Gordon Kane was for $100. Kane was a physicist who believed in the existence of the Higgs boson and challenged Hawking's stance.

5. Did Hawking's bet have any impact on the discovery of the Higgs boson?

No, Hawking's bet did not have any impact on the discovery of the Higgs boson. The researchers at the Large Hadron Collider were not influenced by the bet and continued their experiments to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson.
