A double double split experiment?

In summary, if a detector is set to monitor the first slit in an experiment with particles, and a second slit with no detector is introduced, it is likely that a diffraction pattern will be observed from the second slit while a "particle-like" pattern will be observed from the first slit. However, it is also possible that both slits may result in particles if the number of particles going through the second slit can be determined through subtraction. This is based on the principles of quantum mechanics, but the speaker acknowledges that they are not an expert and their response should be taken with caution.

If you set a detector to monitor the first slit in your experiment you observe particles.

What happens if you set a second slit with no detector for the particles to go through, will you observe waves or particles in the second slit experiment?

So one slit with a detector and one without? Interesting; my guess (though just a guess) would be a diffraction pattern out of the one without the detector and a "particle-like" pattern from the one with? Or maybe both result in particles, because with subtraction one could determine how many are going through the second slit? I'm no expert; I'm a bit rusty on QM, so don't take this post with too much regard.

1. What is a double double split experiment?

A double double split experiment is a type of experiment used in quantum mechanics to study the behavior of particles. It involves passing particles through two separate slits and observing the resulting interference pattern.

2. Why is it called a "double double" split experiment?

The experiment is called a "double double" split experiment because it involves two double-slit setups, one after the other. This allows for more precise analysis of particle behavior.

3. What is the purpose of a double double split experiment?

The purpose of a double double split experiment is to study the wave-like behavior of particles and observe the resulting interference pattern. This can provide insight into the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics.

4. How is a double double split experiment different from a single double split experiment?

In a single double split experiment, particles are passed through one double-slit setup and the resulting interference pattern is observed. In a double double split experiment, the particles are passed through two separate double-slit setups, allowing for more precise analysis of particle behavior.

5. What are some potential applications of a double double split experiment?

A double double split experiment can be used to study the behavior of particles in various physical systems, such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography. It can also provide insights into the nature of light and other fundamental particles.
