Finding the Value of Σk=0k=7a2k from a Multinomial Expansion

In summary, multinomials are algebraic expressions with more than two terms, similar to polynomials but with more terms. To simplify them, you can combine like terms, use the distributive property, or the binomial theorem. The degree of a multinomial is the highest sum of exponents of variables in any one term. They are used in various fields to model real-world situations and can be solved using algebraic techniques.

Homework Statement

If (1+x+x2+x3)5 = Σk=0k=15akxk, then Σk=0k=7a2k is equal to?

The Attempt at a Solution

Put x=1 in the expression given. We get
45 = a0 + a1 + a2 + ... a15

Put x=-1 in the same expression
0 = a0 - a1 + a2 ... -a15

Adding the two results,
45 = 2(a0 + a2...a14)

So Σk=0k=7a2k = 44 = 256.

The answer given is 512. Can somebody point out my mistake?

Why do you think 4^5/2 is equal to 4^4??

lol I don't think so. That's a silly mistake :redface:

1. What are multinomials in math?

Multinomials are algebraic expressions that contain more than two terms, with each term consisting of a coefficient and one or more variables raised to positive integer powers. They are similar to polynomials but with more terms.

2. How do you simplify multinomials?

To simplify multinomials, you can combine like terms by adding or subtracting coefficients. You can also use the distributive property to factor out common terms. Additionally, you can use the binomial theorem to expand and simplify multinomials.

3. What is the degree of a multinomial?

The degree of a multinomial is the highest sum of exponents of variables in any one term. For example, the degree of the multinomial 2x^3y^2 + 5x^2y + 3xy^4 is 3 + 2 = 5.

4. How are multinomials used in real life?

Multinomials are used in various fields such as physics, engineering, and economics to model real-world situations. They can be used to represent complex mathematical relationships and make predictions based on data.

5. Can you solve equations with multinomials?

Yes, equations with multinomials can be solved by using various algebraic techniques such as factoring, the quadratic formula, or the binomial theorem. It is important to simplify the equation and collect like terms before solving for the variables.
