In summary, to set up a wireless connection with a Netgear router, you may need to temporarily turn off your firewall. However, once the installation is complete, you can turn the firewall back on as it should not affect the connection.

I bought a netgear router and want to set up a wireless connection, but it says I have to turn off my firewall to set it up. Do I only need to turn of the firewall until it is set up or does it constantly need to be off to have the internet connection.

only while you are setting it up, most likely. I run my Windows firewall all the time and have a router.

Most likely it will not have any effect on the netgear installation, but for troubleshooting purposes they just want to cover all ground and depending on software firewall configurations it could hamper the install.
