Electrochemical Cell | 75W Bulb | 50min | 12V Battery

In summary, an electrochemical cell is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through a redox reaction. A 75W bulb works by passing an electric current through a filament of tungsten and can be powered by a lower voltage battery, but with reduced brightness. The duration of a 12V battery powering a 75W bulb depends on its capacity, but assuming a standard car battery, it could last for approximately 50 minutes. To test if an electrochemical cell is working properly, you can use a voltmeter to check the voltage output and test the conductivity of the electrolyte solution.

Homework Statement

A 75.0-W light bulb is powered by connecting it to a standard 12.0 V auto lead-storage battery. How much energy (J) is required to keep the bulb burning for 50.0 continuous minutes ?
Assume 100 percent efficency.

Homework Equations

1 watt = 1 J/s
1 J = 1 C x 1 V

The Attempt at a Solution

(50min/12v)(60second/min)(75J/second)

I am confused about how to get Joules by itself

Welcome to Physics Forums.

Use the fact that 75.0 W is 75.0 J/s. If you can do something to cancel the s in 75.0 J/s, you will have the energy in Joules.

1. What is an electrochemical cell?

An electrochemical cell is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through a redox reaction. It consists of two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, immersed in an electrolyte solution.

2. How does a 75W bulb work?

A 75W bulb, also known as an incandescent bulb, works by passing an electric current through a thin filament of tungsten, which is heated to a high temperature and emits light. The wattage indicates the amount of power needed to produce the light.

3. How long will a 12V battery power a 75W bulb?

This depends on the capacity of the battery, but assuming a standard 12V car battery with a capacity of 60Ah, it could power the 75W bulb for approximately 50 minutes before needing to be recharged.

4. Can a 75W bulb be powered by a lower voltage battery?

Yes, but the brightness of the bulb will be reduced. The power output of a bulb is calculated by dividing the wattage by the voltage, so a lower voltage battery will result in a lower power output and therefore a dimmer light.

5. How do I know if my electrochemical cell is working properly?

You can test the voltage output of the cell using a voltmeter. If the anode and cathode are connected and immersed in the electrolyte solution, the voltmeter should show a positive reading, indicating that the cell is producing electrical energy. You can also test the conductivity of the electrolyte solution to ensure it is not depleted.
