Which Domino Row Will Fall First? Ask Here!

In summary, the conversation discusses the speed of two evenly long rows of dominos, with one row having dominos closer together than the other. While it may seem that the row with closer spacing would fall faster due to shorter distances between dominos, it is also important to consider the larger number of dominos in the row with more open spacing and how it may affect acceleration. Ultimately, it is uncertain which row would fall faster in practice.

Hi all,

one simple question.

You have two evenly long rows of dominos. In one row the dominos stand further apart than in the other. If you start both rows at the same time, which will be faster? My guess is the one with the stones closer because the dominos don't need to fall as deep as the others and thus need less time.

What do you think?

Not necessarily: though each domino in the row where they are closer together takes less time hit the next domino, there are more dominoes in the row, however in practice I do think that the row with closer spacing will take less time to fall (though I wonder if this is true as each domino in the row with more open spacing will have more time to accelrate as it falls).

1. What factors determine which domino row will fall first?

The factors that determine which domino row will fall first include the size and weight of the dominoes, the spacing between each domino, and the surface on which they are placed. Other factors such as wind or vibrations can also play a role.

2. How can I predict which domino row will fall first?

Predicting which domino row will fall first can be done by carefully observing the factors mentioned above. Additionally, you can test different arrangements and observe which row falls first in each scenario.

3. Is there a mathematical formula for determining which domino row will fall first?

While there is no specific mathematical formula for predicting which domino row will fall first, there are mathematical principles that can be applied. For example, the principle of potential energy can be used to determine which row has the highest potential energy and is therefore more likely to fall first.

4. Can the order of dominoes in a row affect which one falls first?

Yes, the order of dominoes in a row can affect which one falls first. For example, if a heavier domino is placed before a lighter one, it may cause the lighter one to fall first due to the added force of the heavier domino falling onto it.

5. Are there any other variables that can affect which domino row falls first?

Aside from the factors already mentioned, other variables that can affect which domino row falls first include the shape and design of the dominoes, the angle at which they are placed, and any external forces or disturbances.
