In summary, the preparation of barium peroxide is of interest due to its ability to easily synthesize and decompose oxygen, which can be used in industrial applications. It is also commonly used in the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide, which has various uses. Additionally, it can assist in increasing oxygen content for patients with breathing difficulties. Further information can be found in the November issue of the Journal of Chemical Education.

Homework Statement

Why is the preparation of barium peroxide of interest?
2BaO + O2 --> 2BaO2

The Attempt at a Solution

Well i think it might be because oxygen is separated from the atmosphere and usually oxygen doesn't separate easily.

Any help appreciated.

It can be both synthetised and decomposed easily, that property can be used industrially.

Go to the library and browse November issue of Journal of Chemical Education.

Isn't it mostly used for the manufacture of hydrogen peroxide, which has many uses...Oxygen would be more easily separated based on its boiling points.. and/or solubility or diffusion through a substance... This is how a lot of machines work to increase the O2 content for a patient who has difficulty breathing...

1. What is barium peroxide and how is it prepared?

Barium peroxide is a chemical compound with the formula BaO2. It is a white, odorless powder that is used in a variety of applications, including as a source of oxygen in chemical reactions and as an oxidizing agent in the production of specialty chemicals. Barium peroxide is typically prepared by heating barium oxide with hydrogen peroxide in a process known as the BaO2 process.

2. What are the benefits of using barium peroxide?

Barium peroxide has a number of benefits, including its ability to act as an oxidizing agent, its stability in high temperatures, and its low toxicity compared to other oxidizing agents. It is also relatively inexpensive and readily available, making it a popular choice in various industries.

3. How is barium peroxide used in chemical reactions?

Barium peroxide is commonly used as a source of oxygen in chemical reactions, particularly in the production of specialty chemicals. It can also act as an oxidizing agent, meaning it can transfer oxygen atoms to other substances, resulting in chemical reactions such as combustion or the formation of new compounds.

4. Are there any safety precautions to consider when handling barium peroxide?

While barium peroxide is generally considered to be a safe compound, it is important to handle it with care. It is recommended to wear protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, when handling the powder. It is also important to avoid inhaling the powder or getting it in contact with skin or eyes, as it can cause irritation. It is also important to store barium peroxide in a cool, dry place away from other chemicals.

5. What are some potential applications of barium peroxide?

Barium peroxide has a variety of applications in different industries. It is commonly used as an oxidizing agent in the production of specialty chemicals, as well as in the production of certain types of glass and ceramics. It is also used in pyrotechnics and fireworks, as well as in the production of oxygen-rich air for breathing in submarines and other confined spaces.
