It's pretty simple if you think about it

3. Homework Statement
What would happen if a plant could not obtain enough of the following nutrients from the soil?

a) Potassium
b) Nitrogen
c) Phosphorus

Think about it, what are these elements used for in plants.

Potassium: Mainly involved in enzymes, also involved in the opening and closing of stomata.

Nitrogen: used in protein synthesis, also a important component in chlorophyll, holds the mg metal in place.

Phosphorus: Used in ATP, i.e. the product of respiration, Also an important part of DNA.

Now what would happen if plants could do these processes very efficently?

5. How can using fertilizers to improve crop yield impact on the evironment

NPK fertilizers rely on soluble nitriates or nitrites, this means that they can be easily leeched away. These nutrients often get leeched into local rivers, this causes algae to grow far too fast. Where they decompose, all the oxygen is used out of the water, thus causing fish and such to die.

6. Carry out some research to identify alternatives to adding NPK fertilizer to the soil - highlighting why they are better for the environment?

Plant matter, cow dung. They generally involve less soluble nitogen sources and so are less porone to leeching

8. How do minerals in the soil get to where they are needed in the plant?

They diffuse through the roots, how else.

how that helps:smile:

1. What is the difference between an element and a compound?

An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. It is made up of only one type of atom. A compound, on the other hand, is a substance made up of two or more different elements that are chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio.

2. How do you calculate the molar mass of a compound?

The molar mass of a compound is calculated by adding the atomic masses of all the elements present in the compound. The units for molar mass are grams per mole (g/mol).

3. What is the difference between an exothermic and endothermic reaction?

An exothermic reaction releases energy in the form of heat, light, or sound, while an endothermic reaction absorbs energy from its surroundings. In other words, exothermic reactions give off heat, whereas endothermic reactions require heat to proceed.

4. How do you balance a chemical equation?

Chemical equations must be balanced in order to follow the law of conservation of mass, which states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. To balance an equation, adjust the coefficients of the reactants and products so that the number of atoms of each element is equal on both sides of the equation.

5. What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical change?

A physical change is a change in the physical properties of a substance, such as its shape, size, or state, but it does not alter the chemical composition of the substance. A chemical change, on the other hand, results in the formation of a new substance with different chemical properties. This usually involves breaking and forming chemical bonds.
