Quantum Gravity Experiments: Proposals & Models

In summary, there have been proposals for experiments to test various quantum gravity models, discussed at workshops and conferences such as the Experimental Search for Quantum Gravity (ESQG) in Stockholm in 2010 and in 2007. These proposals include using astrophysical observations and other methods to test different phenomenological models of quantum gravity. However, there are currently no pending experiments in this field that have significant results to report.

Have there been any proposals of plausible experiments for any of the heavily studied Quantum Gravity models?

There was a 5-day workshop in Stockholm this July on Experimental Search for Quantum Gravity. The organizer was Sabine Hossenfelder and she recently posted a write-up of what she took away from the conference.

I think the short answer is yes proposals but nothing immediately pending that you would want to hear about.

You could read Sabine's summary of the conference---as I recall there were about 24 papers presenting different ideas for pursuing QG experimentally (and by astrophysical observation).

"We offer a brief survey of existent and planned experimental tests for quantum gravity. First, we outline the questions we wish to address, and then introduce some of the phenomenological models that are currently used in quantum gravity, both with and without a lowered Planck scale. After that, we summarize experimental areas where these models can be tested or constrained and discuss the status of the field."
Comments: This article is partly based on the talks at the workshop on Experimental Search for Quantum Gravity, Stockholm, July 12-16 2010

There was also a ESQG conference or workshop in November 2007

You can find the list of speakers and talks there. Maybe also videos of talks.

Here is the website for the July 2010 ESQG conference

It has abstract summaries of each of the 24 papers that were presented.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply.

1. What is quantum gravity?

Quantum gravity is a theoretical framework that attempts to reconcile the theories of quantum mechanics and general relativity. It aims to describe the behavior of matter and energy at a microscopic scale and the curvature of spacetime at a macroscopic scale.

2. Why is quantum gravity important?

Understanding quantum gravity is crucial for a complete understanding of the universe and its fundamental forces. It could also potentially lead to the development of new technologies and applications.

3. How do scientists study quantum gravity?

Scientists study quantum gravity through theoretical models and experiments. These experiments involve probing the behavior of particles and fields at extreme energy levels and observing the effects of gravity on them.

4. What types of experiments are proposed for quantum gravity?

Proposed experiments for quantum gravity include high-energy particle colliders, precision measurements of gravitational waves, and observations of quantum entanglement in gravitational systems.

5. What are some current models for quantum gravity?

Some current models for quantum gravity include string theory, loop quantum gravity, and asymptotic safety. These models attempt to describe the behavior of quantum matter and gravity at very small scales and high energies.
