What is the difference between paramagnetic materials and their behaviour in magnetic fields?? Thanks a lot for the help...having a magnetism test 2 days from now
Paramagnetic materials have individual atomic magnetic moments that align in the presence of an external magnetic field, but return to their random orientation when the field is removed. Ferromagnetic materials have a permanent magnetic moment that is aligned in a specific direction, even in the absence of an external field.
Paramagnetic materials are weakly attracted to magnetic fields, while ferromagnetic materials are strongly attracted and can even become permanently magnetized.
Paramagnetic materials include aluminum, copper, and oxygen gas. Ferromagnetic materials include iron, nickel, and cobalt.
Paramagnetic materials can easily be demagnetized by removing the external magnetic field. Ferromagnetic materials, however, can only be demagnetized by heating them above a certain temperature.
Paramagnetic materials are used in MRI machines, sensors, and electronic devices. Ferromagnetic materials are used in motors, generators, hard drives, and speakers.
