Physics behind spiral/helical growth of crystals and cavities?

I am currently researching some corrosion pits that are growing in a spiral fashion.
Can anyone point me to some physics that would explain the growth of spirals in nature?
Even better the growth of spiral voids in nature. Ideally something more than hand-waving (i.e. vector calculus would be useful as it might end up in my thesis).
I am not a physicist so apologies if this seems a remedial request.
