Which will dissolve in water Castor Oil or Potassium Iodide?

In summary, the conversation is discussing the question of which substance, Castor Oil or Potassium Iodide, will dissolve in water. The person responds by asking the other to think about the properties of the molecules and use common reasoning to find the answer, adding that the chemistry behind it can be found in textbooks and online resources. They also mention two chemical calculators, BATE and CASC, that can aid in calculations and conversions for labs and education purposes.

You should think yourself first, we can't do homework for you.

Which one do you think yourself will dissolve in water: oil or an salt (potassium iodine = KI). Do you know any properties of the molecules that causes this?

Have you ever seen an oil dissolving in a water? On the other hand, KI is very similar in its properties to sodium chloride - which is table salt. Now, use common reason to find the answer:)
And then find out the chemistry behind it. This will be found in your text, as well as in hundreds of places on the internet. Ask Google.

1. What is the solubility of Castor Oil and Potassium Iodide in water?

Castor Oil is insoluble in water, while Potassium Iodide is highly soluble in water.

2. Why does Castor Oil not dissolve in water?

Castor Oil is a non-polar compound, meaning it does not have any charged particles that can interact with water molecules. This makes it unable to dissolve in water, which is a polar solvent.

3. What factors affect the solubility of a substance in water?

The polarity of the substance, temperature, pressure, and the presence of other solutes can all affect the solubility of a substance in water.

4. Can the solubility of Castor Oil and Potassium Iodide be changed?

No, the solubility of a substance in water is a characteristic property that cannot be changed. However, the rate of dissolution can be affected by factors such as temperature and agitation.

5. How can I determine the solubility of a substance in water?

The solubility of a substance in water can be determined experimentally by adding a known amount of the substance to a fixed amount of water and observing if it dissolves completely or partially. The amount that dissolves is then measured and recorded. This process can be repeated at different temperatures to determine the effect of temperature on solubility.
