Why Are Adult Sites Still Legal in the USA?

In summary: It's not a topic for children or those who haven't yet reached an age where they can make an informed judgement. In summary, the internet is flooded with innumerable porn sites that can contaminate the minds of youngster (<18 years old). They are very immoral and NASTY, the pictures of gay sex, anal sex, oral sex, incest and so on are so terrible. Most of the porn sites are from USA. Does this tell me USA government agrees with these porn-culture? Is it an immoral country? Why do you allow these nasty things to be legal? What can we do to BAN it? The USA is a culture that feels that people have the right to make their own

The USA is a culture that feels that people have the right to make their own moral decisions, rather than having the government make them for you. That's not to say that the US government is pro-porn, they are just pro-freedom. Porn is legal because no one is being made to do anything -- both the producers and the consumers are choosing on their own free will to do so.

You can use various kinds of software to block access to porn if you'd like, or you could just try educating your youth to make better decisions about what to look at.

This should probably be in one of the philosophy forums...

However, the reason why these sites are not banned in the US is because of the Bill of Rights. As long as those who pose for the photos are consenting adults, it's perfectly legal. Pornography would likely be protected under freedom of expression or freedom of press (I'm not quite sure which, but I do know it's one of the freedoms in the First Amendment).

It is illegal (in the US) to allow minors to view pornography. However, it is impossible to protect against this, especially considering the anonymity of the Internet. It's similar to marijuana in that respect -- just because it is illegal does not stop it from happening.

What you view as "immoral," however, is your own opinion. No one forces you to view these sites (although, I'd imagine unsolicited pornographic spam violates some such law). Just because an individual finds something immoral and distateful does not mean that it should be banned. That does not make any sense in a democracy. If you were of the majority, then perhaps it would be banned. The copious amount of pornographic sites on the Internet leads me to believe that you are indeed in a minority, and therefore there's very little you can do about it (much less if you live in another country, as you seem to be implying through your post).

It is not really possible to ban access to any site. Many governments have tried to ban certain things, but there are always groups such as Cult of the Dead Cow attempting to combat those efforts.

They are nasty and immorral in YOUR opinion. There is no qualified authority for morality.

If you are already used to it, you will feel nothing wrong.
It is like a thief, used to stealing, feel no guilt of doing so.
Overall, porn is a depravity, very nasty!
Freedom is Freedom To Do Good, not Freedom to do Wrong, understand?

Bad analogy. Porn is nothing like stealing. Porn is only bad *in your opinion.* Your opinion may be shared by others, but just because it is immoral in your opinion doesn't make it so.

I admire both the content and wording of this statement and felt compelled to say as much.

Even in large, capital letters, it's wrong. Freedom is the right to do anything you damn well please so long as no one else is harmed in the process.

Freedom is simply the right to choose and do as you wish. If free speech meant you had not-offend anyone or ****ing swear then it wouldn't really be free speach would it?

I actually believe that pr0n is good and healthy. Sexuality is not something to pretend doesn't exist until you're married and have kids and never speak of it again. Whacking and jacking in moderate levels is also quite healthy.

If we were to ban 1 more freedom then at least we could ban something like obesity or smoking or something...

Freedom is the right to do anything you damn well please so long as no one else is harmed in the process.

Please define the word "anything" !
Can I include Smoking?

I read the news that a few American Tobacco Companies were sued to compensate people for advertising Cigarrette is good, they had to pay out billions dollars. Why not you say Smoking is Freedom, it only harms the smokers themselves, the spread of smoke in the air to other non-smokers is due to the Physical Law, not the fault of smokers and tobacco company.

Please use your Freedom to defend for the tobacco companies, can you?

If I run in nude on the street, dp I harm anyone? Obviously not!
But when the police catches me, I tell him,"Hey, it is my freedom to run in nude, I do not harm anyone. This is American Freedom, please let me go!".
Anyhow, unfortunately, I still get fined and maybe locked-up.

Tell me, how to justify my deed with the reason Freedom that does not harm anyone is morally right.

If you keep changing the topic from porn to stealing to smoking to nudity, we're going to have a tough time having a cogent discussion.

Bottom line, smoking is NOT illegal. Advertising it to children MIGHT be. Making other people inhale your smoke in public places MIGHT be.

Running nude in the street could be said to harm children in the same way that you claim porn would harm them (exposing them to sexuality), so I can't see you using that to defend yourself.

if the microprocessor can automatically block Porn, then i will say it is safe for children to surf the net.

There is absolutely no way to block access to every pornography site. There's thousands if not millions, and you would have to gather the IP ranges for each of those porn sites and block them on a firewall that everyone in the United States routes through, and one does not exist. China actually has implemented some sort of this to block access to IP ranges that they believe contain something they don't want the Chinese people to see. This can all be circumvented with a daily proxy list, though. All in all, governments can create all the laws they wish to limit the use of the internet, but they have no way to enforce it.

I'm attempting to stay out of the philosophical componet of this argument, but I must say: you have a rather Victorian look on sex.

  • #15
lol. You keep trying to make arguments from analogies, but all of your analogies are poor.

Stick to your topic, which is why can't they ban porn.

Porn is only bad in your eyes. It's only immoral in your eyes. There is no qualified authority on morality. No one can say what is and what is not moral.

Do you know this from personal experience?

Are you an immoral person?

I wonder why you have posted so many topics related to morality lately. You make subjective comments and ask subjective questions in an objective manner, and you seem to think that your narrow viewpoint is the only valid one. Is that moral?

Some forms of pornography are illegal in the USA. Child pornography is one example, this is illegal because at least one of the participants (the child) is not a consenting adult. Even "legitimate" porn sites are against this form of child abuse and clearly state that all models must be of legal age.

Some local areas ban viewing of pornographic material, but it is hard to enforce. For one thing the definitions of "pornographic" and "indecent" vary and are open to subjective interpretation.

IF people don't want their children viewing porn its the parents responsibility!

Can someone please explain to me how you can tell by looking at pictures the difference between normal sex and incest type sex?

This post reminds me of a relative of mine who was VERY anti-Clinton, anti-porn, etc. It didn't much matter to me what Bill Clinton did behind closed doors with his schlong. But my aunt is a nosey busy-body. I never read any of the news coverage of it which as I understand was incredibly detailed. It didn't really matter to me. Guess who did? My busy-body aunt soaked it up like crazy. So if you think these things are so awful, and I agree some are very distasteful, how is it that you have seen them? I know there are things on the internet that friends have told me about that I just don't want to see. I am not curious. I do not go to the sites. But it seems you have gone to sites that display what you claim to be awful things. What's up with that? Every time you go onto a site their hit counter will click one more time thus giving the owners an impression that people are interested. That does not help your cause.

No one can say what is and what is not moral.

Yes No one (man), but GOD can!
Anyway, most parents don't want their children to see porn . Something more effective must be done to block porn.

What a poor excuse for an idea. This will only work for people like you, who can claim that god talks to them. Why do you want to preach to this forum? Shouldn't you be on a forum of fellow people to whom god talks?

Yeah--it's called parenting.

Most parents accomplish this by monitoring how their children use the Internet. It's surprising how much time is available for parenting when you don't spend all your time trying to control the lifestyle of everyone else in the world.

I think it is hard to block porn completely. We will always have some people out there who have different views about this. If they don't support porn, they don't care at al

Just live your life by the values you have always believed in. You can give up on others but not yourself, never.

and there is no points for defending yourself anymore because no matter what you going to write, you will be attacked.

These sites are not unique to the US, these sites are in every country. Why do you single out the US?

That is the democratic nature of the Internet. No one person, company or institution owns and controls it. You have to understand that this porn sites don't only run in the US. It's all over the world! You wouldn't want somebody regulating porn sites since it may cause a chain reaction and before you know it somebody will be regulating your time spent visiting websites, etc...if you don't like a porn site then don't visit it.
Just go to another one more to your liking

I have to say that with all the years I've been on the internet, and with all the email accounts I've had, I've never actually had porn just magically appear. I've gotten advertisements via email to visit porn sites, but they didn't actually contain any pictures. I've never had my browser automatically redirect to a porn site unless I was already viewing something adult-oriented. You actually have to look for it. So, if you want to keep your kids from viewing porn, just don't let them surf the internet unsupervised. It's just like watching the TV. If you know there is programming on that you don't want your children to see, you don't leave them flipping channels while you sit in another room. I even know someone who went to the extreme of removing the televisions from their home, and they didn't object to porn, just to exposing their children to adult topics on TV before they judged they were old enough to understand them in the proper context. The same can be done with the internet. It's a convenience, not a necessity.

Man.. The best porn I've encountered, is my PlayboyHDTV. It's high-definition playboy TV that comes in on my Voom satellite. Freaking *bad-ass*!

They have this call in show, and people call in and tell the people what to do and they'll do it. Bad ass :)

And what God is that? I get the feeling that your God and my God might be completely different entities. There are more religions than I can count so odds are we don't hold the same beliefs.

As far as a more effective way of keeping porn away from kids...
How about better parenting. You would be surprised how good a kid can turn out if the parents put a little time into raising them.

First off just because you think god wouldn't want us to look at porn that does not make porn wrong. Porn like everything has it's use in life and if you choose to look at it fine. Don't try and push moral beliefs on people.

Think about the children what about the children. Well you're thinking about the children they are running around getting in trouble. Stop worrying about them and just watch them and prevent them from doing things they shouldn't be doing whether it's looking at porn or running in traffic. It doesn't matter what most parents want. If most parents wanted to pour gas on their kids and watch them burn would it make it right? No. Don't tell responsible adults that they can't look at porn because you refuse to watch your kids.
