Crystal Lattice Distances: Min Thry Range to 10EXP(-15)?

In summary, the minimum theoretical distance between adjacent lattices in a crystal is typically on the order of 10^-10 meters, as determined by the atomic radii of the atoms in the crystal. This is significantly larger than the distances found in atomic solids, which are on the order of 10^-15 meters. The search for crystals with lattices spaced at these small distances may be limited by the size of the nuclei of the atoms in the crystal.

Can somebody tell me what is the minimum theoretical distance between adjacent lattices in a crystal? I've read about materials where the order of magnitude of the distance between lattices is ~10EXP(-9). If there any crystal/solid with lattices spaced ~10EXP(-15)?

Not any atomic solid.

Typical atomic radii are ~ 10^-10 m. (H- atom ~ 5*10^-11, others bigger).
The number you are hoping to get is too small...in fact it's about the diameter of a small nucleus (Z ~ 5 to 10).

PS : Welcome to PF...and why are you looking for such dense crystals ?

If you have a bigger picture in mind, it would help to know what you are trying to figure out.

What is a crystal lattice?

A crystal lattice is a repeating three-dimensional pattern of atoms, ions, or molecules in a solid material.

What are crystal lattice distances?

Crystal lattice distances refer to the distances between neighboring particles in a crystal lattice. These distances are measured in units of length, such as nanometers or angstroms.

How are crystal lattice distances determined?

The distances between particles in a crystal lattice can be calculated using mathematical formulas based on the size and arrangement of the particles. This information can also be obtained experimentally using techniques such as X-ray diffraction.

What is the minimum theoretical range for crystal lattice distances?

The minimum theoretical range for crystal lattice distances is 10^-15 meters. This is the smallest distance that can be accurately measured using current technology and theoretical models.

Why is understanding crystal lattice distances important?

Crystal lattice distances play a crucial role in determining the physical and chemical properties of a material. Knowing the distances between particles can help scientists understand the behavior of a material and how it may interact with other materials.
