In summary, the Bush administration is quietly planning to almost double the number of combat troops in Iraq this year, potentially reaching a record high of over 200,000 by the end of the year. This second surge involves deploying more combat brigades and extending tours of duty for troops already in Iraq. The Army denies this second surge, but evidence suggests otherwise with deployment orders for 36 units and plans to increase the combat force. Additionally, private companies like DynCorp are recruiting Border Patrol agents to train Iraqi soldiers, offering lucrative contracts.

Those sneaky $%^&*(#

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration is quietly on track to nearly double the number of combat troops in Iraq this year, an analysis of Pentagon deployment orders showed Monday.
When additional support troops are included in this second troop "surge," the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq could increase from 162,000 now to more than 200,000 — a record high number — by the end of the year.

The extending tours part has already been done.

The second surge of troops to Iraq is being executed by deploying more combat brigades to the country, plus extending tours of duty for troops already there.

edit:
DynCorp was in Tucson last week recruiting Border Patrol agents to work in Iraq. The job was to train Iraqi soldiers on how to guard their borders. They were offering $140k for a one year contract plus a $25K sign up bonus.

The Army denies a second surge.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Carl S. Ey denied the report, according to Powell. "There isn't a second surge going on; we've got what we've got," Ey told him. "The idea that there are ever going to be more combat brigades in theater in the future than the secretary of defense has authorized is pure speculation."

Then again:

"The little-noticed second surge, designed to reinforce U.S. troops in Iraq, is being executed by sending more combat brigades and extending tours of duty for troops already there," the story, by Washington correspondent Stewart M. Powell, reports.

Powell said he spent 10 days collecting and analyzing deployment orders for 36 different units and their planned deployment in Iraq through December 2008. "We took the announced deployments and tracked them month by month," he told E&P. "This is just laying the groundwork for what could be a sizeable combat force."

I cannot comment on political decisions or military strategies. However, it is concerning to see an increase in the number of troops being sent to Iraq, especially considering the already high number of troops currently deployed. It is important to carefully consider the potential consequences and impact on both the US soldiers and the Iraqi people. Additionally, the use of private contractors in training Iraqi soldiers raises questions about the effectiveness and sustainability of such tactics. Further discussion and evaluation of this decision is necessary to fully understand its implications.
