Species, concept of pure and impure breeds.

In summary, a species is a group of organisms that can interbreed with each other and commonly do so. This means that while German Shepherds and Pitbulls are different breeds, they are still able to interbreed because they are part of the same species. The concept of pure and impure breeds refers to inherited characteristics within a breed, not different species. It is important to note that the definition of a species also includes the idea that interbreeding commonly occurs, but there are exceptions in rare cases.

The definition of species is "a group of organisms that can interbreed with each other". So, how is interbreeding of two dogs of different species, say a german shepherd and a pitbull, possible? And the concept of a "pure" and "impure" breed - how will you explain it? As according to the definition, a GSD cannot be crossed with a pitbull?!

A breed is not the same thing as a species.

German Shepherd and Pitbull are not different species, they are different breeds of the same species. The concept of pure and impure breeds refers to inherited characteristics of the breed and lineage (pedigree).

A breed is a stock of animals or plants within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having been developed by deliberate selection.

Also, your definition lacks precision. It could be improved thus:

A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed with each other and commonly do so.

Lions and tigers can interbreed yet are members of separate species, yet interbreeding is rare.

What is the concept of pure and impure breeds?

The concept of pure and impure breeds refers to the genetic makeup and breeding history of a particular species. A pure breed is one that has been selectively bred for many generations to have consistent physical and behavioral characteristics, while an impure breed is one that has a mixture of genetic traits and may not have a distinct breed standard.

How are pure breeds created?

Pure breeds are created through selective breeding, where individuals with desired traits are mated to produce offspring with those same traits. This process is repeated for many generations to establish a consistent genetic makeup and physical appearance in the breed.

What are the advantages of pure breeds?

Pure breeds have consistent physical and behavioral traits, making them predictable in terms of their appearance and behavior. This can be advantageous in certain industries, such as agriculture, where specific traits are desired for production. Pure breeds may also have lower rates of certain genetic diseases due to their limited gene pool.

What are the disadvantages of pure breeds?

Pure breeds often have a limited gene pool, which can lead to an increased risk of genetic diseases and health issues. They may also be more susceptible to environmental factors and have less genetic diversity, making them less adaptable to changing conditions.

What is the importance of preserving pure breeds?

Preserving pure breeds is important for maintaining the genetic diversity within a species. It allows for the preservation of unique traits and characteristics that may be beneficial in the future. Additionally, pure breeds have cultural and historical significance, and their preservation can help to maintain cultural heritage and traditions.
