ElectroChemistry oxidation-reduction

In summary, oxidation-reduction, also known as redox, is a chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between two substances. These reactions have various real-life applications in industries such as metal production, batteries, and biological processes like respiration and photosynthesis. Oxidation and reduction refer to the loss and gain of electrons, respectively, resulting in changes in oxidation state. The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is a measure of the tendency of a substance to gain or lose electrons, and it can be used to determine the strength and direction of a redox reaction. The rate of these reactions can be influenced by factors such as the concentration of reactants, temperature, surface area, presence of catalysts, and the nature of

How do you know when a species can be oxidized or reduced my an ion?
For ex. Which of the species can be oxidized by H+ and which species can be reduced by H2?
Ce4+, Ce3+, Fe2+,Fe3+,Fe, Mg2+,Ni2+,Sn

Depending on the level you should either use reactivity series or redox potentials from tables - or use redox potentials from tables and Nernst equation.

What is oxidation-reduction in ElectroChemistry?

Oxidation-reduction, also known as redox, is a chemical reaction in which electrons are transferred between two substances. The substance that loses electrons is oxidized, while the substance that gains electrons is reduced.

What are some real-life applications of oxidation-reduction reactions?

Oxidation-reduction reactions are used in various industries, such as metal production, batteries, and fuel cells. They are also essential in biological processes, including respiration and photosynthesis.

What is the difference between oxidation and reduction?

Oxidation refers to the loss of electrons, while reduction is the gain of electrons. In other words, oxidation involves an increase in oxidation state, while reduction involves a decrease in oxidation state.

What is an oxidation-reduction potential?

Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is a measure of the tendency of a substance to gain or lose electrons. It is measured in millivolts (mV) and can be used to determine the direction and strength of a redox reaction.

What factors can affect the rate of oxidation-reduction reactions?

The rate of oxidation-reduction reactions can be affected by the concentration of reactants, temperature, surface area, and presence of catalysts. The nature of the substances involved and the pH of the solution can also influence the rate of the reaction.
