Nuclear engineering does integrate both fields. I'm registered for a material science course next semester, it's part of the curriculum. When you really think about building a plant you have to decide what materials are best at shielding or have resilience to radiation damage. You also have to take into account materials that absorb neutrons and materials that don't absorb neutrons. So it's a lot of material science involved in nuclear engineering. Maybe major in one and minor in the other if its possible at your school
