1 Megabit vs Kilobit: Clarifying the Difference

In summary, 1 megabit is equal to 1024 kilo bits or 1000 kilo bits, and 1 kilo bit is equal to 1024 bits or 1000 bits. The difference between 64 kilo bits and 64 kilo bits per second is that the former is just a quantity while the latter is a measure of speed, meaning 64 kilo bits are transferred every second. It is important to note that the terms kilobit and kilobyte can have different meanings depending on the context, either being equivalent to 1024 or 1000 bits/bytes. It is recommended to refer to the Wikipedia articles for a more detailed explanation.

Is 1 megabit=1024 kilo bit or 1000 kilo bit, similarly 1 kilobit= 1000 bits or 1024 bits?
I know 1 byte=8 bits. and what difference 64 kilo bits and 64 kilo bits per second has?
thanks

1 megabit = 1024 kilo bit
1 kilo bit= 1024 bits

64 kilobit is just an amount.64 kilo bits per second is the speed(It means 64 kilo bit is transferred every second

Have you tried reading the wiki article? It's got a good breakdown of what it means:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte

@adjacent, according to the wiki, it may mean ##2^{10}## or ##10^3## bytes, depending on context.

edit: whoops, sorry mixed bits and bytes there.
Here's the kilobit article:

1. What is the difference between a megabit and a kilobit?

A megabit (Mb) is equal to 1 million bits, while a kilobit (Kb) is equal to 1,000 bits. This means that a megabit is 1,000 times larger than a kilobit.

2. Why are megabits and kilobits important to understand?

Megabits and kilobits are important because they are commonly used to measure digital data transfer rates. They are also used to describe the storage capacity of devices like hard drives and flash drives.

3. How do megabits and kilobits relate to other units of measurement?

Megabits and kilobits are part of the International System of Units (SI) and are used to measure data in the digital world. Other related units include gigabits (Gb), terabits (Tb), and petabits (Pb).

4. Can you give an example of the difference between a megabit and a kilobit?

One example is the difference in download speed for internet connections. A 1 megabit per second (Mbps) connection can download 1 million bits of data in one second, while a 1 kilobit per second (Kbps) connection can only download 1,000 bits of data in one second.

5. Is a megabit always greater than a kilobit?

Yes, a megabit is always greater than a kilobit. This is because the prefix "mega" means 1 million, while the prefix "kilo" means 1,000. Therefore, a megabit is 1,000 times larger than a kilobit.
