In summary, a two axis solar tracker is a device that automatically orients a solar panel or array to follow the movement of the sun in the sky using two axes of rotation. It works by using sensors to detect the sun's position and motors to adjust the panel's orientation. The main benefit of using a two axis solar tracker is increased efficiency, but it also has a higher initial cost and may not be suitable for all locations. It is possible to build your own tracker, but it requires expertise and resources.

I've built a two axis solar tracker before using 3 photo-resistors. By comparing the voltage across any two of the resistors angled slightly away from each other you can determine an intensity gradient from the light source to track.

The ultimate solution would be to use a CCD camera aimed at the sun.

1. What is a two axis solar tracker?

A two axis solar tracker is a device that automatically orients a solar panel or array to follow the movement of the sun in the sky. It has two axes of rotation, allowing it to track the sun's movement both horizontally and vertically.

2. How does a two axis solar tracker work?

A two axis solar tracker works by using sensors to detect the position of the sun and motors to adjust the orientation of the solar panel or array. The sensors gather data about the sun's location and send signals to the motors, which move the panel or array to face the sun directly.

3. What are the benefits of using a two axis solar tracker?

A two axis solar tracker can significantly increase the efficiency of a solar panel or array by up to 40%, as it allows the panel to always be facing the sun directly. This can result in higher energy production and cost savings over time.

4. Are there any disadvantages to using a two axis solar tracker?

The main disadvantage of using a two axis solar tracker is the initial cost. These devices can be more expensive than fixed solar panels and may also require additional maintenance. Moreover, they are not suitable for all locations, such as areas with limited sunlight or high wind speeds.

5. Can I build my own two axis solar tracker?

Yes, it is possible to build your own two axis solar tracker using readily available materials and components. However, this requires a good understanding of electronics and mechanics, as well as access to tools and resources. It is recommended to consult with a professional or use a pre-made tracker kit for safety and efficiency purposes.
