Strength of Mild Steel 1/16" Wall Tubing

In summary, the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing can vary and is typically around 58,000 psi for tensile strength and 36,000 psi for yield strength. Compared to other types of steel, it is considered to be lower in strength but is still widely used due to its affordability and versatility. The strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing can be increased through various methods, such as heat treatment and adding alloying elements. Factors such as the manufacturing process, raw materials, and impurities can affect its strength, and while it is commonly used in structural applications, the specific strength requirements should be considered.

I am working with mild steel 1/16" wall tubing. I am sleeving this over another tube to extend it. The attachment point is 12" past the end of the sleeved tube. How much weight can the extention tube handle before it would bend?
Thanks

More information is needed.

What are the diameters of the tubing?
Mild steel is a pretty vague material spec. What material is this tubing actually fabricated from?
How long are both tubes?
What sort of load is going to be put on the extension? Point load, distributed load, moment, what?
How is the first tube supported?

1. What is the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing?

The strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing can vary depending on the specific grade of steel used and the manufacturing process. However, on average, it has a tensile strength of approximately 58,000 psi and a yield strength of around 36,000 psi.

2. How does the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing compare to other types of steel?

Mild steel 1/16" wall tubing is considered to be a lower strength steel compared to other types such as high-strength or stainless steel. However, it is still widely used in various industries due to its affordability and versatility.

3. Can the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing be increased?

Yes, the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing can be increased through various methods such as heat treatment, cold working, and adding alloying elements. These processes can improve the mechanical properties of the steel, making it stronger and more durable.

4. What factors can affect the strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing?

The strength of mild steel 1/16" wall tubing can be affected by factors such as the manufacturing process, quality of raw materials, and the presence of impurities. Additionally, the shape and size of the tubing can also impact its strength.

5. Is mild steel 1/16" wall tubing suitable for structural applications?

While mild steel 1/16" wall tubing is commonly used in structural applications, it is important to consider the specific strength requirements for the project. In some cases, a stronger type of steel may be more suitable for structural purposes.
