3-phase Induction Motor:Supply given to Rotor & Stator winding shorted

In summary, a 3-phase induction motor is an electric motor that uses three alternating current phases to create a rotating magnetic field, which drives the motor's rotor and produces mechanical energy. It works by using three separate windings on the stator, each connected to a different phase of the AC power supply. If the supply given to the rotor and stator windings are shorted, the motor will not function properly. The advantages of a 3-phase induction motor include high efficiency, low maintenance, simple construction, ability to operate at variable speeds, high starting torque, and suitability for harsh environments. The speed of a 3-phase induction motor can be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the power supply or using a variable frequency drive (V

In a 3 phase slip ring Induction motor, 3 phase balanced supply is given to rotor winding & stator winding is short circuited . Then rotor would - run against the direction of rotating field.

Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

Are you unable to understand why a motor housing would turn if you held the shaft and used slip rings to supply power to the motor housing?

1. What is a 3-phase induction motor?

A 3-phase induction motor is a type of electric motor that uses three alternating current (AC) phases to create a rotating magnetic field, which in turn drives the motor's rotor to produce mechanical energy.

2. How does a 3-phase induction motor work?

In a 3-phase induction motor, three separate windings are placed on the stator (stationary part) of the motor, with each winding connected to a different phase of the AC power supply. When the power is applied, the currents in the three windings create a rotating magnetic field that interacts with the rotor (rotating part) to produce motion.

3. What happens if the supply given to the rotor and stator windings are shorted?

If the supply given to the rotor and stator windings of a 3-phase induction motor are shorted, the motor will not be able to function properly. This is because the short circuit will disrupt the flow of current in the windings, preventing the creation of the necessary magnetic field for the motor to operate.

4. What are the advantages of a 3-phase induction motor?

3-phase induction motors are widely used in industrial applications due to their numerous advantages. These include high efficiency, low maintenance, simple construction, and ability to operate at variable speeds. They also have a high starting torque and can operate in harsh environments.

5. How can the speed of a 3-phase induction motor be controlled?

The speed of a 3-phase induction motor can be controlled by adjusting the frequency of the power supply or by using a variable frequency drive (VFD). VFDs allow for precise control of the motor's speed and are commonly used in industrial settings to optimize energy usage and performance.
