Superconductor/Ferromagnet Interfaces

In summary, a superconductor/ferromagnet interface is the boundary between a superconductor and a ferromagnet, where the two materials interact with each other. These interfaces are unique because of the proximity effect, which can lead to novel physical phenomena. Potential applications of superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces include spintronics, quantum computing, and high-speed electronics. However, studying these interfaces is challenging due to the complex interplay between the materials and the potential influence of impurities or defects. To optimize these interfaces for specific applications, scientists can adjust parameters such as material thickness and type, as well as studying the fundamental physics of the interface.

I'm trying to understand physics at these interfaces, specifically how a Cooper pair of opposite spins can tunnel into a ferromagnet which would prefer like spins.

Does anyone know some references, preferably textbooks that address these interfaces? I found a Rev. Mod. Phys. "Proximity effects in superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures"
that's useful but maybe a little advanced for me.

1. What is a superconductor/ferromagnet interface?

A superconductor/ferromagnet interface is the boundary between a superconductor and a ferromagnet, where the two materials meet and interact with each other.

2. What makes superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces unique?

Superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces are unique because they exhibit a phenomenon known as the proximity effect, where the superconducting and ferromagnetic properties can influence each other and lead to novel physical phenomena.

3. What are the potential applications of superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces?

Superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces have potential applications in areas such as spintronics, quantum computing, and high-speed electronics.

4. What are the challenges in studying superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces?

One of the main challenges in studying superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces is controlling and understanding the complex interplay between the two materials at the interface. Additionally, the presence of impurities or defects can greatly affect the properties of the interface.

5. How can superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces be optimized for specific applications?

To optimize superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces for specific applications, scientists can vary parameters such as the thickness of the materials, the type of materials used, and the temperature at which the interface is studied. Additionally, understanding the fundamental physics of the interface can also aid in optimizing its properties for different applications.
