Pressure in Garden Hose: Solving P + (1/2)pv^2 + pgh

In summary, the conversation discusses the equation for gauge pressure and how it applies to a garden hose that is not currently in use. The equation P + (1/2)pv^2 + pgh is referenced and compared to the energy density at different points in the hose.

Am I substituting other variables into P + (1/2)pv^2 + pgh in this problem?

A garden hose is attached to a water faucet on one end and a spray nozzle on the other end. The water faucet is turned on, but the nozzle is turned off so that no water flows through the hose. The hose lies horizontally on the ground, and a stream of water sprays vertically out of a small leak to a height of 0.82 m. What is the gauge pressure inside the hose? (Gauge pressure is the amount by which the pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure.)

That is the correct equation. All you have to do is compare between a point inside the hose (energy density in hose = P_in ) and the point at the top of the vertical spray (energy density at top = pgh + Po).

Great, got the answer, thanks!

What is pressure in a garden hose?

Pressure in a garden hose refers to the force exerted by the water inside the hose against its walls. It is typically measured in pounds per square inch (psi) or kilopascals (kPa).

How is pressure calculated in a garden hose?

The pressure in a garden hose can be calculated using the equation P + (1/2)pv^2 + pgh, where P is the atmospheric pressure, p is the density of water, v is the velocity of the water, and h is the height of the water column. This equation takes into account the effects of both static and dynamic pressure.

What factors affect pressure in a garden hose?

The pressure in a garden hose can be affected by several factors, including the water flow rate, the diameter and length of the hose, and the height and angle of the hose relative to the ground. Other factors such as kinks or obstructions in the hose can also impact the pressure.

How can I increase the pressure in my garden hose?

To increase the pressure in your garden hose, you can try increasing the flow rate of the water by opening the faucet more, using a shorter and wider hose, or elevating the hose to a higher position. Removing any kinks or obstructions can also help improve the pressure.

Why is it important to maintain proper pressure in a garden hose?

Maintaining proper pressure in a garden hose is important for efficient water usage and effective watering of plants. Too low of pressure can result in weak or inconsistent water flow, while too high of pressure can lead to wastage of water and potential damage to the hose or plants being watered.
