Free Energy and Potential Energy

I think that I may be confused about what free energy is.

I want to find the maximum PE of a system. So this is simply the Hamiltonian when the KE term is zero. So what is the free energy? I wrote in my notes that this is the maximum potential energy, but that doesn't sound quite right now. Can it be expressed in terms of the Hamiltonian?
