Material used in Cockcroft-walton generator

When Cockroft and walton did their experiement in the 40s, what kind of highly conductive material did they have acess to?

I've been looking on google to find the material use to make the capacitors and diodes in the Cockroft-walton generator (the "original" one, on wikipedia) at that time but I didnt find anything.
