Reaction between water and chromium metal

In summary, when water and chromium metal react, the chromium metal will undergo a redox reaction and the water will produce hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions. The reaction is exothermic and increases the pH of the solution. Safety precautions should be taken when conducting this reaction.

Hi there,

How to write the reaction between water and chromium metal under standard (i) acid and (ii) base condition?

Cr + 3H2O ----> Cr(OH)3 + 3e- + 3 H+ (acid condition)

basic solution ?

Please help

In acid I would start with Cr and H+, yielding Cr3+.

Cr(OH)3 is a correct product for alkaline solution, and I would assume OH- to be one of the reactants.

In reality Cr is passivated by oxides, so its reactions are not that simple.

1. What happens when water and chromium metal react?

When water and chromium metal react, the chromium metal will undergo a redox reaction, releasing electrons and forming positively charged ions. The water will also undergo a reaction, producing hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions.

2. Is the reaction between water and chromium metal exothermic or endothermic?

The reaction between water and chromium metal is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. This is because the reaction produces hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable and reacts readily with oxygen in the air to release energy.

3. What are the products of the reaction between water and chromium metal?

The products of the reaction between water and chromium metal are hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions. The chromium metal will also form positively charged ions, which may form a coating on the metal surface.

4. How does the reaction between water and chromium metal affect the pH of the solution?

The reaction between water and chromium metal will increase the pH of the solution, making it more basic. This is because the hydroxide ions produced from the water will increase the concentration of hydroxide ions in the solution, making it more alkaline.

5. What safety precautions should be taken when conducting the reaction between water and chromium metal?

The reaction between water and chromium metal should be conducted in a well-ventilated area, as hydrogen gas is produced which is highly flammable. Protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, should also be worn to avoid contact with the reactants. It is also important to handle the chromium metal with care, as it can be toxic if ingested or inhaled.
