In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of extensible phone design, also known as Phonebloks, which allows users to customize and upgrade individual components instead of replacing the entire device. The phone consists of a base or "blok" that holds essential components and additional bloks can be added for personalized features. The main benefit of this design is its sustainability and reduction of electronic waste, but limitations include a potentially less sleek and compact design and limited compatibility between components. Currently, Phonebloks is still in the concept stage and not available for purchase, but there are other modular phone options on the market.

It may be impossible. I was under the impression that phones are designed in such weird ways to try to pack as much stuff into the given volume as possible. But, that could just as possibly be an excuse for not having replaceable/upgradable parts and thus forcing new purchases. Idk. If you like the idea, you should support them (https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/2931-phonebloks). It's free, but requires a FB, Twitter, or G+.

That is freakin' cool.

1. What is extensible phone design?

Extensible phone design, also known as Phonebloks, is a concept for a modular phone that allows users to customize and upgrade individual components instead of having to replace the entire device.

2. How does Phonebloks work?

Phonebloks consists of a base or "blok" that holds all the essential components of a phone, such as the processor, battery, and display. Users can then add on additional bloks, such as a camera, speaker, or extra storage, to create a personalized phone that meets their specific needs.

3. What are the benefits of extensible phone design?

The main benefit of Phonebloks is its sustainability and reduced electronic waste. With traditional phones, when one component breaks or becomes outdated, the entire device needs to be replaced. With Phonebloks, only the specific blok needs to be replaced, resulting in less electronic waste and cost savings for the user.

4. Are there any limitations to extensible phone design?

One limitation of Phonebloks is that it may not be as sleek and compact as traditional phones due to its modular design. Additionally, not all components may be compatible with each other, limiting the options for customization.

5. Is extensible phone design available for purchase?

Currently, Phonebloks is still in the concept stage and not available for purchase. However, there are other modular phone options on the market that follow a similar design, such as the Fairphone and Google's Project Ara.
