I am not sure bt i think you can use gas detector with ppm reading you can also using remote sensing and gps system.

People do this already. A mass spectrometer with an air sampler (essentially a small leak of air into the spectrometer) combined with GPS. Some optical measurements will work with gases with strong absorbances, but mass spec. is probably the most universal.
