In summary, the conversation discusses the issue of news items being posted on a physics and science-oriented forum, which dilutes the purpose of the forum and leads to repetitive and irrelevant posts. Suggestions are made to create a separate section for news items or to filter them out from the New Posts results.

"News items" dilute and interfere with New Posts

Why do we have what seems the majority of forums posting in the evening to be those of news agencies? They usurp the purpose of PF as primarily physics/science oriented and make the majority of posts at times arbitrary and repetitive (0 replies and 1 view). From what I can tell, these posts are not utilized by our members. Why not create instead a hyperlink on the homepage for those who wish to peruse this news?

It's the "new spam", I guess. The movie promotion "press release" posts are annoying too.

You mean the News Items show up in your New Posts results? You can disable it by going to:

https://www.physicsforums.com/profile.php?do=editoptions --->>Scroll down then Find: Thread Display Options Window--->>Go to: Exclude Special Posts in 'New Posts' Searches=
===>>Check either one:

Exclude News Reporter Posts
Exclude Usenet Posts

then Save Changes

Cheers

Thanks also for helping this computer semi-illiterate, Pro - I'll see how it goes.

1. What does it mean when news items dilute and interfere with new posts?

When news items dilute and interfere with new posts, it means that the constant influx of news articles and updates on social media platforms can make it difficult for new posts to gain visibility and engagement. This is because the news items tend to dominate the feed and push down newer posts, causing them to be easily missed by followers.

2. How does the dilution and interference of news items affect social media users?

The dilution and interference of news items can affect social media users in several ways. It can make it challenging for them to keep up with their friends' posts and updates, as the news articles tend to dominate the feed. It can also lead to a sense of information overload and make it difficult for users to find relevant and meaningful content amidst the noise.

3. What impact does this phenomenon have on the spread of fake news?

The dilution and interference of news items can contribute to the spread of fake news on social media. This is because the constant stream of news articles can make it challenging for users to fact-check information before sharing it. It also increases the chances of fake news being shared multiple times, making it appear more valid and credible.

4. Are there any solutions to address this issue?

There are several solutions that can help address the dilution and interference of news items on social media platforms. Some include implementing algorithms that prioritize recent and relevant content over news articles, giving users the option to filter out news items from their feed, and encouraging users to fact-check information before sharing it.

5. How can scientists contribute to mitigating this problem?

Scientists can play a crucial role in mitigating the dilution and interference of news items on social media. They can use their expertise to educate the public on how to identify and verify reliable sources of information. They can also collaborate with social media platforms to develop tools and algorithms that can help filter out fake news and prioritize accurate and relevant content.
