Question regarding research (related to research topic and writing thesis)

In summary, when deciding on a topic for a PhD research, it is best to choose something that interests you and that you have extensive knowledge in. It is possible to work on two disconnected topics and include them in the same thesis if they can be connected and relevant in some way. When it comes to feeling like you have done enough work for a thesis, it often depends on successfully defending it and securing a postdoc position for the following year.

I have three questions:

1. Suppose your supervisor has given you freedom to choose topic of research (for PhD). How do you decide what topic to work on?

2. Can one work on two somewhat disconnected topics and write about both in same thesis?

3. When do you feel that you have done enough work to write a thesis and get PhD
degree?

1. Work on what interests you, and probably what you are doing/have done extensive research in.

2. If you can find the time and make them connected and relevant in some way.

3. When the thesis is handed in.

What is the purpose of conducting research?

The purpose of conducting research is to systematically gather and analyze information in order to increase knowledge and understanding about a particular topic or issue. This can lead to the development of new theories, solutions to problems, or advancements in a particular field.

How do I choose a research topic?

Choosing a research topic involves identifying a specific area of interest, reviewing existing literature, and determining a research question that has not yet been sufficiently answered. It is important to choose a topic that is relevant, feasible, and personally interesting.

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?

Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data, such as interviews, observations, and documents, to understand social phenomena and explore complex relationships. Quantitative research involves collecting and analyzing numerical data using statistical methods to test hypotheses and make predictions.

What is the structure of a thesis?

A thesis typically includes an introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion. The introduction provides background information and outlines the research question, the literature review summarizes existing research on the topic, the methodology explains the research design and methods used, the results present the findings of the study, the discussion interprets the results and relates them to the research question, and the conclusion summarizes the main points and implications of the study.

How do I ensure the validity and reliability of my research?

To ensure the validity and reliability of research, it is important to use appropriate research methods, carefully select participants, minimize bias, and clearly document all procedures and findings. It is also essential to use multiple sources of evidence and to have the research reviewed by peers to ensure its accuracy and credibility.
