Can mach number increase from 1.8 to 1.22 in Fanno flow?

In summary, Fanno flow is a type of compressible flow characterized by subsonic speeds and heating of the fluid due to friction. The Mach number, a measure of the fluid's speed relative to the speed of sound, decreases in Fanno flow due to the effects of friction and heating. This parameter is important in determining the behavior of the fluid and is used in calculations and analysis of Fanno flow problems.

In a problem in our book, it says that the mach number in a constant area duct with friction (Fanno flow), the mach number increases from 1.8 to 1.22...however, from the Fanno line, its very clear that in the supersonic region, mach number always decreases along the flow...is there some kind of error?

Sorry, lol...I guess I must be too tensed up with exams...its ok, since mach number decreases from 1.8 to 1.22!

1. What is Fanno flow?

Fanno flow is a type of compressible flow in which the gas or fluid moves at subsonic speeds. It is characterized by the heating of the fluid due to friction, and is often used to model the flow of gases through pipes or ducts.

2. Can the Mach number increase from 1.8 to 1.22 in Fanno flow?

No, the Mach number cannot increase in Fanno flow. The Mach number is a measure of the ratio of the fluid's speed to the speed of sound, and in subsonic flow, it must decrease as the fluid slows down due to friction and heating. Therefore, it is not possible for the Mach number to increase from 1.8 to 1.22 in Fanno flow.

3. How does friction affect the Mach number in Fanno flow?

Friction in Fanno flow causes the Mach number to decrease. As the fluid moves through a pipe or duct, it experiences friction with the walls of the surface, which slows it down and causes it to heat up. This decrease in speed results in a decrease in the Mach number.

4. Why does the Mach number decrease in Fanno flow?

The Mach number decreases in Fanno flow due to the effects of friction and heating. As the fluid flows through a pipe or duct, it experiences friction with the walls of the surface, which slows it down and causes it to heat up. This decrease in speed results in a decrease in the Mach number.

5. What is the significance of the Mach number in Fanno flow?

The Mach number is an important parameter in Fanno flow as it describes the ratio of the fluid's speed to the speed of sound. It is used to determine the compressibility and behavior of the fluid in subsonic flow, and is also used in calculations and analysis of Fanno flow problems.
