In summary, admission into the ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM in Canada for foreigners requires a good score in IELTS. However, universities have increased their required scores, with Waterloo University now asking for 7.5, York University 7, and Ottawa University 7. It is important to note that the universities are strict about their required IELTS scores, as it is a reflection of the student's English language skills. This is in line with the University of Waterloo's policy of ensuring that undergraduate students have sufficient English language skills to succeed in their academic curriculum and co-operative education programs. Failure to meet the minimum English language requirements may result in the withdrawal of an offer of admission. However, exceptional circumstances may be considered by

In order to get admitted into the ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM in Canada for the foreigners, good score in IELTS is a must. But most of the universities have increased the requied score in IELTS from this year. For insrance, Waterloo University is now asking for 7.5, York University 7 and Ottawa University 7. But my question is do the universities are strick upon their such score in IELTS? I mean, if i get 6.5 or 7 in IELTS then will the waterloo university accept me for the Engineering Undergard Progarm? Because, Toronto University, McGill University are asking for 6.5 only. So does it really matter?

Well, I Googled IELTS and Waterloo, and got this page:

English Proficiency Test Scores said:
You are NOT required to provide an English proficiency test score if
  • your first language is English, or
  • you are a bilingual francophone Canadian and you have been education in Canada, or
  • your 4 most recent years of education have been taught entirely in English in a country outside of Canada.

Please be aware that official transcripts indicating subjects taught, grades achieved, and language of instruction must be provided by your secondary and/or post-secondary institution(s) to support your claim.

You ARE required to provide an English proficiency test score if
  • your first language is not English and
  • your 4 most recent years of education have not been taught entirely in English

And perhaps the quote which directly answers your question of why they ask for this, and what they can do if you fail to meet the requirements:

English Requirements said:
The official language of instruction at the University of Waterloo is English. It is the responsibility of the University to ensure that its undergraduate students have sufficient English language skills to cope with the demands of the academic curriculum as well as, for many, the communication skills to be successful in co-operative education programs.

The University reserves the right to withdraw any Offer of Admission if the applicant fails to meet the minimum English language requirements for the faculty to which they have applied.

So, if you can somehow convince the Waterloo admission people that you a singularly talented person who must be recruited, then you are probably in. Otherwise, probably not.

I understand the importance of standardized tests like IELTS in evaluating language proficiency for academic purposes. It is common for universities to have minimum score requirements in order to ensure that students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their chosen program. However, it is important to note that these requirements may vary among universities and even among different programs within the same university.

In regards to the specific question about whether universities are strict on their IELTS score requirements, it is difficult to make a general statement as each university may have their own specific admissions criteria. It is possible that some universities may be more flexible with their score requirements, while others may strictly adhere to the minimum score. It is always best to check with the specific university and program to understand their policies and requirements.

Additionally, it is important to consider that a good IELTS score is not the only factor that universities look at in the admissions process. They also consider other factors such as academic performance, letters of recommendation, and personal statements. So even if a student does not meet the minimum IELTS score, they may still be considered for admission based on other strengths in their application.

In conclusion, while a good score in IELTS is important for admission into an engineering undergraduate program in Canada, it is not the only factor that universities consider. It is best to check with the specific university and program for their score requirements and to also focus on other aspects of the application process.

1. What is a "score requirement" in IELTS?

A score requirement in IELTS refers to the minimum score that an individual needs to achieve in order to meet the language proficiency requirements for a specific purpose. This could be for admission to a university, immigration, or employment purposes.

2. How is the score requirement determined?

The score requirement is determined by the institution or organization that sets the requirement. It may vary depending on the purpose and the country in which the individual is applying. For example, a university in the United States may have a different score requirement than a university in Canada.

3. What is the minimum score requirement for IELTS?

The minimum score requirement for IELTS varies depending on the purpose and institution. However, the lowest possible score in IELTS is 1 and the highest is 9. Generally, a score of at least 6.5 is considered a good score for most purposes.

4. How can I meet the score requirement in IELTS?

To meet the score requirement in IELTS, you need to prepare and take the test. This involves familiarizing yourself with the test format, practicing your language skills, and taking practice tests. It is also recommended to enroll in an IELTS preparation course to improve your chances of achieving your desired score.

5. What happens if I do not meet the score requirement in IELTS?

If you do not meet the score requirement in IELTS, you may need to retake the test or consider alternative options. Some institutions may offer conditional admission or have alternative language requirements. It is important to check with the institution or organization for their policies on score requirements and potential alternatives.
