Definition of chemical elements

In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of oxygen gas as a chemical element and whether it is better referred to as a molecule. The conclusion is that oxygen gas is not an element, but rather a molecule made up of oxygen atoms. The periodic table lists oxygen as an element, which can be connected to its place on the periodic table using its atomic number.

Is oxygen gas a chemical element?
Is oxygen atom a chemical element?
The oxygen element in the periodic table actually refers to an oxygen atom or oxygen gas that exist naturally in our surrounding air/atmosphere?
Thanks to anyone that help and try to explain.

Ntzntz, conceptual quaestions... Open your textbook & read the definition of a chemical element.See which option for [itex] O_{2} [/itex] fits the definition.

For the III-rd,u might remember the connection between Z,the element & the place in the periodic table.

Daniel.

Oxygen in general is an element, oxygen gas is better referred to as a molecule. The oxygen mentioned on the periodic table refers to atom(s) of the element...

What are chemical elements?

Chemical elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. They are the building blocks of all matter and are represented by unique symbols on the periodic table.

How many chemical elements are there?

As of 2021, there are 118 known chemical elements. However, this number is constantly changing as scientists continue to discover and create new elements through nuclear reactions.

What is the difference between atoms and chemical elements?

Atoms are the smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element. A chemical element, on the other hand, is a substance made up of only one type of atom. In other words, all atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons in their nucleus.

What are the main properties of chemical elements?

Chemical elements have distinct physical and chemical properties that help distinguish them from other elements. These properties include atomic mass, atomic number, density, melting and boiling points, and reactivity. Each element also has a unique set of chemical and physical properties that make it useful for various applications.

How are chemical elements classified?

Chemical elements are classified based on their atomic number, electron configuration, and chemical properties. They are organized into groups and periods on the periodic table, with elements in the same group having similar properties. Elements can also be classified as metals, nonmetals, and metalloids based on their physical and chemical characteristics.
